Tour de Georgia 2008 came through Union County two days last week during Stage 5 and Stage 6 of the week long event.
Meeks Park in Blairsville was the starting line for Stage 6 on Saturday.
It was the third time in six years that Blairsville was a host city, all three times being a starting line.
Suches had the race come through for a sixth consecutive year on Friday. The race has actually gone through Suches nine times - three of the years a loop brought the race through Suches, out of town, a huge loop around and back through Suches again.
Every year the cyclists have passed in front of historic Woody Gap School, the smallest public school in the state.
Saturday morning, after starting in Meeks Park, the cyclists toured the city, passing the North Georgia News and the Historic Courthouse on the Square twice each.
United Community Banks, based in Union County, is a major sponsor for the Tour de Georgia. They presented the King of the Mountain jerseys during the event. |

Taking care of students after busses crunched

On a rainy afternoon in Georgia, approximately 150 students made an after school trip on school buses to Union General Hospital. This was no field trip.
Three school buses were involved in a slow speed accident near the high school. The incident became an opportunity for school officials and hospital staff to utilize the plans in place to deal with an emergency situation. Those plans worked well. Union General Hospital Emergency Room went into action immediately.
"We are very fortunate we did not have any serious injuries and that is always our primary concern," Stephens said. "Safety is our No. 1 issue. Sometimes unfortunate things happen, as with this incident involving three buses. We have a process we use for emergency situations. The good thing that came out of this was being able to test our procedures. I was very impressed that the administrators from the school system went to the hospital to help and were an able to assist the students and parents. They did the things they were supposed to do to take care of the kids." |

An anonymous phone call resulted in the arrests of two suspects and the seizure of 25 marijuana plants, a firearm, a device for growing marijuana, a glass smoking device and prescription pills not in an original container. William Manning, 58, Blairsville, and Noel Thomas, 55, Blairsville, have been charged with felony possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and manufacturing marijuana. Union County Sheriff's Investigator Garrick Parks and Sheriff Sgt. Chad Deyton were informed that a male and female residing at Low Creek Road in Union County were doing drugs. "The caller did not give a name or a phone number for fear of retaliation," Inv. Parks said.
Early during the week of April 14, Inv. Parks and Sgt. Deyton - with assistance from Inv. Tim Wood , Inv. Mark Cecci and Inv. Charlie Ross - went to the residence to investigate.
